Form & Function

Expression of Truth & Beauty

The balance and relationship of form and function in architectural design has been a primary focus for architects throughout history. The final form of the design must adapt to requirements of project, with changes in shape, appearance, and structure. Within this project, us students gain firsthand experience by incorporating a kinetic element into existing bridge protypes. Ultimately adapting to and expressing how the newly incorporated mechanism changed the original design.

Movement Analogies

The following household items were utilized as potential mechanisms for the kinetic portion of the bridge. There was a functional requirement for a potential opening of 30’ x 40’ to allow for boats and other water traffic to pass as needed.
